Annual monitoring of diabetes

Modified on Sun, Mar 12, 2023 at 2:37 PM

Diabetes is a chronic condition requiring ongoing treatment to prevent complications. Regular testing and screening are essential components of diabetes management in order to detect and treat potential complications. Here are some of the annual tests and screenings related to diabetes:

  • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Test: This blood test measures the two- to three-month average blood glucose levels. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that people with diabetes get a HbA1c test at least twice per year if their diabetes is well-controlled and four times per year if it is not.

  • Lipid panel: This blood test determines the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. High levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can increase the risk of heart disease for people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics undergo a lipid profile test at least once a year.

  • High blood pressure is a common complication of diabetes that can result in serious health issues. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics have their blood pressure checked at every doctor's appointment.

  • Diabetic nephropathy is a condition characterized by damage to the kidneys caused by diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that people with diabetes undergo a urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) test at least once a year to detect kidney damage.

  • Diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina, resulting in diabetic retinopathy, as determined by an eye exam. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics undergo a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year to screen for this condition.

  • Foot exam: Diabetes can cause nerve damage in the feet, leading to diabetic neuropathy. In addition, poor circulation in the feet can make it difficult for wounds to heal. The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics receive a foot exam at least once a year to check for these conditions.

To manage their condition and prevent complications, individuals with diabetes should undergo routine testing and screening. These tests may include, among others, the HbA1c, lipid profile, blood pressure, kidney function, eye exam, and foot exam. It is essential to discuss with your healthcare provider what diagnostic tests and screenings are necessary for your specific needs.
