Functional Medicine Lab Tests

Modified on Fri, Mar 3, 2023 at 10:10 PM

The labs ordered as part of a functional medicine screening may differ depending on the patient's particular health concerns, medical history, and other factors. However, as part of an initial evaluation, functional medicine practitioners may order the following labs:

  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP): This blood test assesses liver and kidney function, as well as glucose levels and electrolyte balance.

  • Complete blood count (CBC): This blood test counts various blood components such as red and white blood cells and platelets.

  • Lipid panel: This blood test measures cholesterol and other lipid levels in the blood, which can be an important indicator of cardiovascular health.

  • Thyroid panel: This blood test measures thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, which can aid in the diagnosis of thyroid imbalances.

  • Vitamin D levels in the blood are measured in this blood test, which is important for immune function, bone health, and other functions.

  • Adrenal function panel: This test may include cortisol and other adrenal hormone measurements, which can aid in the diagnosis of adrenal imbalances.

  • Sex hormone panel: This test may include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and other sex hormone measurements, which can aid in the diagnosis of hormonal imbalances.

  • Comprehensive stool analysis: This test can detect parasites and other pathogens as well as identify imbalances in gut bacteria.

  • Food allergy/sensitivity testing: These tests can aid in the identification of food sensitivities or allergies that may be contributing to chronic health problems.

  • Heavy metal testing: This test can help identify heavy metal levels in the body, which can be used to predict environmental toxicity. It's important to note that functional medicine practitioners may use additional testing beyond these standard labs, depending on the patient's specific needs.
