Insomnia

Difficulty falling or staying asleep; waking up too early.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), sleep hygiene, and medication (e.g., benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepine hypnotics)

Sleep Apnea

Loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, weight loss, surgery, oral appliances

Narcolepsy

Excessive daytime sleepiness, sudden loss of muscle tone (cataplexy), and vivid hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up

Medication (e.g., modafinil, sodium oxybate), scheduled naps

Restless Leg Syndrome

Uncomfortable sensations in the legs, an irresistible urge to move the legs, and disrupted sleep

Medication (e.g., dopamine agonists), leg massages, hot or cold therapy

REM sleep behavior disorder

Acting out dreams during REM sleep, potentially causing injury to oneself or others.

Medication (e.g., clonazepam), safety precautions (e.g., padding the bed, removing sharp objects)
