  • The therapist may collaborate with the parents to develop a plan that gradually increases the child's independence and fosters trust between the child and the parents. This approach to family therapy focuses on problem-solving and finding practical solutions to family issues. 

  • The therapist may assign family members homework or tasks to complete outside of therapy sessions. A therapist might work with a family whose parents have difficulty convincing their children to complete their homework. 

  • The therapist may assign the parents to develop a reward system for their children's homework completion, and then work with the family to implement this system. This approach focuses on the narratives families tell about themselves and how these narratives can be altered to produce more positive outcomes. The therapist assists family members in identifying negative narratives and creating new, positive narratives. 

  • A therapist might work with a family in which one member has an addiction history. The therapist may assist the family in reframing their addiction narrative as one of resilience and strength, and in creating a new narrative of future hope. This approach focuses on the emotional bonds between family members and how strengthening these bonds can improve relationships.

  •  In a safe and supportive environment, the therapist helps family members recognize and express their emotions. A therapist may work with a family in which the parents have difficulty communicating with their adolescent daughter. The therapist may assist the parents in identifying and expressing their feelings regarding this issue, and collaborate with the family to develop a strategy to improve communication and connection.
